because john boehner couldn't control his caucus. don't forget, that's how we got into this mess in the first place. as you pointed out, talk about a lack of leadership, my goodness. >> steve, isn't this what the republicans have wanted all along, across-the-board cuts? i know they're very concerned about defense spending and defense projects, because it's in the backyard of a lot of these republicans. but across-the-board cuts is really what they wanted all along, because this is going to force the democrats to possibly go after the big three. what about that? >> i think there is something to that. i mean clearly their hopes all along were the sequester, as damaging as it is gives them the cuts that they want without any real revenue. the president was able to get $600 billion in revenue towards the end of last year. but at this point republicans are thinking no more revenue, no more compromising, and they want a deal that has 100% cuts, zero percent revenue. and for all the ills, all the damage it's going to do the military, the ec

the message from john boehner, if you're a low-skilled worker, hey, stay poor. democrats are ready to pounce all over this. white house senior adviser dan pfeiffer asked republicans for an actual plan to ensure full-time workers will not live in poverty. the president plans to press the issue hard as he takes it -- makes it a big part of his policy agenda on the road. republicans, they are all over the place in response. for instance, take congresswoman marcia blackburn of tennessee. she said a low minimum wage was good for her when she got her first job. >> i remember my first job. when i was working in a retail store, growing up down there in laurel, mississippi, i was making like $2.15 an hour. and i was being taught how to responsibly handle those customer interactions. and i appreciated that opportunity. >> oh, it's all about character building with the republicans. that's what it is. don't want to pay anybody. get your character right. blackburn's calculation, my friends, is way off the mark. after inflation her $2.15 an hour job would be worth between $12

. >>> plus, the big congressional panel on john boehner's decision to go on vacation before we go off another cliff. >>> it was the biggest meteor blast in 100 years. so how did we know about an asteroid the size of a swimming pool but not a meteorite the size of a house? good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. progressives finally have something to be hopeful about when it comes to congress. now, the 113th congress kicked off in a pretty disappointing fashion. there could have been meaningful filibuster reform. there was a way around the gridlock. but of course, harry reid caved. that's another story in itself. so nothing has really changed. all you have to do is look at the chuck hagel situation in the senate to see just how bad everything is right now. but i want you to imagine liberals, just imagine what it would be like if we had 60 senators like this. >> i'm really concerned that too big to fail has become too big for trial. that just seems wrong to me. >> it sure does. newly elected senator from massachusetts elizabeth warren is doing what she promised to

let's take a look at these important challenges that john boehner's house has passed. they passed the ryan budget, which is far out of touch with mainstream americans. we made that decision back in november. the country does not want voucherized medicare. boehner's house passed 30 repeals of obama care. more out of touch nonsense that the country rejected. recently they passed a bill pretending to withhold pay raises from congress, but of course that's something they constitutionally can't do. and president obama says it's time to get serious. and it is. but republicans show no signs of seriously addressing the pain ahead for the middle class in this country. and it is about the middle class. and then there is simpson/bowles, which i think is a total fraud, and we shouldn't be listening to people who have, number one, retirement security and health care security for the rest of their lives. they're the wrong people to listen to. they're doing a lot of grandstanding. but they shouldn't get much attention. more commentary coming on simpson/bowles in just a moment. get yo

house speaker john boehner continues to say spending? what's the big problem? it's amazing john boehner can identify any problems considering how little the guy works. count 'em. 19 days. that's how many days the house has been in session since the start of 2013. let's see. six weeks, 19 days. pretty good deal, isn't it? do the math. these house members are only showing up for work 59% of the time. i bet you could get away with that. meanwhile, the people who will get hurt by these cuts are the ones who are working hard, five or six times or seven days a week. now look, folks. this election was about what? the middle class. that's all president obama talked about on the campaign trail was the middle class. and the middle class and the poor are the first ones who will take a hit as long as republicans keep denying reality. get your cell phones out. i want to know what you think. tonight's question. will republicans hurt average americans just to spite the president? text "a" for yes. text b for no to 67622. you can always go to our blog at ed.msnbc.com. we'll br

house speaker john boehner was pressed about giving people the votes they deserve on gun safety today. here it is. >> how do we address violence in our society, how do we take meaningful steps to reduce that violence? and as i made clear for weeks, when the senate -- if the senate acts, we'll be happy to take a look at what they do. >> neera, is this a failure of leadership for boehner to just kick it over to the senate, we'll see what they do first? what do you make of that? >> i mean, i don't think americans define leadership by saying things like when the senate acts, we'll see what they can do. i think that really -- that kind of lackadaisical attitude towards something that people see as a real threat to their communities, their neighborhoods, their own safety i think is one of the reasons why people think the house republicans are so out of touch. >> sure. >> and they're in single digits. i think the issue is i think democrats will get votes on this in the senate. and then it's going to be on speaker boehner to show that they're going to give the votes on this in the house. >> i
